The UH-1H Helicopter was manufactured under the collaboration between the US Bell Helicopter and the ROC Aero Industry Development Center (AIDC). Equipped with a T53-L-13B turboshaft engine of 1,400 horsepower, it has a maximum speed of 110 knots (204 km/h) and a service ceiling of 23,000 feet (7,010 m). The helicopter can carry 13 fully armed soldiers.
On August 13, 1969, Air Force General Yung-chao Li, as the representative of the ROC Air Force, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the US government in Washington, DC. He later also signed a co-production agreement with Bell Helicopter in Texas to produce 50 helicopters. On December 14, 1970, the first UH-1H was cooperatively manufactured at the AIDC in Taichung. On the same day, the ROC Air Force Commander-in-Chief, General Yi-fan Chen, turned the helicopter over to the Army Commander-in-Chief,General Hao-chang Yu. The arrival of the air cavalry has tremendously enhanced the combat capabilities of the ROC Army.
After the first batch of 50 helicopters was manufactured, the ROC and Bell Helicopter decided to continue the co-production partnership with another new batch. The AlDC was indigenously able to produce 60% of the fuselage and 27% of the engine of its facilities. The Army used the UH-1H for military exercises and emergency rescue.
