The T-38A Jet Trainer, manufactured by the US Northrop Corporation, is powered by two J85GB-5A axial-flow turbojet engines, each with 3,580 lb (1,746 kg) of thrust. It has a maximum speed of 705 knots (1,307 km/h) and a service ceiling of 53,600 feet (16,337 m).
During the Vietnam War, the ROC Air Force (ROCAF) handed over 48 F-5A/B aircraft to the South Vietnam Air Force in 1972 at the request of the US; the US furthermore transferred 28 T-38A trainer aircraft to the ROCAF for the transition training for the F-5 groups, as well as for the instrument flight training for the fighter-bombers. The 28 aircraft were returned to the US in 1975.
In 1995, the ROCAF rented 40 T-38A aircraft from the US for preparatory training of the 2nd generation aircraft retrofitting. This project was named “Tzu Ying”. When the mission ended in 1998, those aircraft were returned to the US.
