The T-CH-1 was indigenously designed by the ROC Air Force Aero Industry Development Center (AIDC) in 1970. The first prototype rolled off the assembly line at the plant on September 2, 1973 and was named “Chung-hsing. lts maiden flight was completed successfully on November 3 of the same year. Eqmipped with a single turboprop engine, the T53-L-701A, with 1.450 horsepower, the A-CH-1 has a maximum speed of 320 knots (592 km/h) and a service ceiling of 32,000 feet (9,754m). lt has two .50 caliber (12.7 mm) madame guns installed, and is capable of carrying four 5-inch rockets and four 2.75-inch rocket iaunchers.
Fifty two aircraft, including two prototypes, were manufactured from 1976 to 1981, when they entered the ROCAF services, to 1981. T-CH-1 trainer aircraft were used for the ab-initio flight training by the cadets from 1978 to 1985 (from the 59th Class B to the 66th Class A) at the ROC Air Force Academy. The aircraft were modified as A-CH-1 attack aircraft and R-CH-1 reconnaissance aircraft in 1985 and used for the missions of forward air control and coastal air-patrol at the 71st and 72nd Squadrons of 443rd Fighter Wing until they were decommissioned in 1998.
